The original owner, Dr.Armstrong a Middleton medical doctor and his family moved into their new home at 145 Commercial St during Christmas of 1890.
The home stayed in the Armstrong family until it was sold to the present owners in 1975.
The home operated as the Armstrong House, a thriving tourist home from the mid 1920’s until the Hannams opened it as Hannam House Bed and Breakfast in 1977.
Our property is a large heritage home with much character. Over the years the home has been lovingly restored. Most recently the kitchen has been totally rebuilt and updated. New hardwood floor, cupboards, island, and new back stair to the upper level and laundry room are among the renovations. All windows have been replaced, the furnace and oil tank are 1 year old, 2 bathrooms are newly rebuilt, a third bathroom has been updated. The guest living room has been totally reconstructed including new hardwood floor, french doors from the entrance hall, new windows, walls and ceiling. Electrical has been totally upgraded including 200 amp service.
The property is a half acre of fenced grounds with extensive mature trees, shrubs, perennials, blueberry bushes, cherry tree, and rhubarb. A patio and gazebo provide a space for guests to relax. A workshop in the backyard provides storage and space for many endeavours.
Some years ago the property housed a successful dining room which provided a venue for staff parties and intimate weddings. It lends itself to an elegant tearoom in the summer months.
Hannam House is located in the center of town, within walking distance of several restaurants providing a range of choices including fresh local seafood.
Our BnB is centrally located with many major tourist attractions within an hours drive. Guests appreciate our central location for day trips to UNESCO sites such as Lunenburg and Grand Pre/ Annapolis Royal and Port Royal, Canada’s oldest settlements are 30 minutes from our BnB. Whale watching is possible near Digby. The Bay of Fundy is 10 minutes north . Watch seals off the shore, enjoy magnificent sunsets, and highest tides in the world. East of us within 45 minutes are Wolfville , home of Acadia University, Halls Harbor, Blomindon and CapeSplit. Many wineries are located east and west of the BnB.
Our bed and breakfast is within a few minutes walk from free recreational facilities including tennis, basketball courts, quarter mile walking or running track, public swimming pool, children's playground and splash park.
The Annapolis River which flows through town provides opportunity for canoeing and kayaking. The river is navigable west for 30 miles. Canoes and kayaks can be borrowed from the information center at no charge.
Maconald Museum, the first consolidated school in Canada houses a major antique clock collection as well as an extensive public genealogical research center.
Hannam House has 4 guest rooms. Three share a bath and one has an ensuite. A third bathroom and potential guest room are located on the first floor. The third floor is finished as one large room and with some renovations could provide owners quarters.
A spacious foyer greets guests, a parlor offers a quiet place to gather, a welcoming sunroom provides cable TV and access to Netflix for rainy days.
A dining room provides a full breakfast for guests from 8-9:30 A.M. We have been providing a first course of stewed rhubarb and yogurt, orange juice, bacon and scrambled eggs, toast, homemade preserves tea and coffee.
Hannam House has an excellent occupancy rate with many repeat guests. Our reputation is at a very high level as documented on our website with Booking.com and Airbnb.
