This beautiful home was in the same family from 1853-2000. We are the only non family to live in the house. We are located in Digby Nova Scotia, a quaint fishing village leading through the Digby Gut into the Bay of Fundy. We are the Scallop Capital of the world and have the worlds Highest Tides.
The Breakers Bed and Breakfast built between 1853-1857 exemplifies the following:
Historical significance : This house has been mentioned in several early Nova Scotia history books for its significance in the settlement of Nova Scotia. The original owner was a merchant born just outside Digby. He became a politician and served his province and country. He built his house with a commanding view of the Digby waterfront.
Architecture Detail : The house is a full three stories in the Georgian design and neoclassical style. There are 32 large stately widows. Most rooms have two or three windows. The roof is made of slate shipped from Belgium. There are crates of slate still in the carriage house. The exterior is period clapboard painted yellow. It was painted yellow in 1853 and remains the same to this day. The carriage house in back is a full two stories and now serves as a three car garage. The carriage house can be divided into 4 new guest rooms by a new owner.
Property: The house sits on the largest property facing the harbor. The property goes from street to street. Guests relax on our porch watching the fishing boats coming and going, the sailboats and changing tides. Excellent restaurants are just a few steps away. Whale watching is popular with guests.
Interior: The main floor has four reception rooms with a fireplace in each room, a kitchen with a fireplace and two bake ovens, and a large pantry behind the fireplace. There is a back stairway to the second floor. Off the kitchen is a half bath. All ceiling light fixture throughout the house are original.
There is a winding staircase in the front hall to reach the second floor. On the second floor there are 5 bedrooms, of which 4 have ensuite full baths. Three of the rooms have fireplaces. All rooms are well appointed for high end accommodation for guests. The third floor is finished with the same square footage as the first and second floors.
